Transcript
Hello, my friends! Welcome to the History of Modern Art with Klaire, an exploration of Modernism one movement at a time viewed through a 21st century intersectional feminist lens. I’m your host, Klaire Lockheart, and I look forward to sharing my research about Modernism with you. As an art educator, I am driven to make art accessible and help others appreciate the art world around them. Art is a crucial aspect of the human experience, and I want to help you understand the context and history of Modern Art.

Over the course of the next few months, I will talk about Modernism one art movement at a time in chronological order. I like to teach art history moving forward in time to make it easier to see the relationships between artists and art styles. Art history isn’t a perfect little timeline, but this strategy will help you retain the information. This why I recommend that you subscribe to the History of Modern Art with Klaire and listen to the episodes in order.
I will begin this series with Impressionism, and then move through Orientalism, Postimpressionism, Modernism, Fauvism, Cubism, Suprematism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and then I will conclude with Postmodernism. I hope you will find the topics I cover helpful whether you are an artist, a student, or you’re just a really awesome person who wants to listen to me flap my gums about Modern Art. Now, I know that I will barely cover the tip of the iceberg of Modern Art history, and I am going to miss many genres and important artists. However, I am structuring this podcast series as I would an introductory art history course, and I want you to become familiar with the most popular topics. I decided to create this audio series shortly after I began teaching Modern Art History at a nearby college because many of my friends revealed that they wished they could sneak into the classroom and listen to my classes.
On that note, permit me to share the disclaimer that I personally don’t like every Modernist artwork, and I certainly am not a fan of every single famous artist. Even though I am an artist and I have been teaching art over a decade, I don’t love everything about art, which is why I want you to be prepared for small tirades in future episodes because I enjoy arguing with old dead guys. I don’t work for a museum or auction house, and so I don’t have to pretend that everything made with paint is a painting and every famous artist was a genius. There’s a fair amount of controversy and unfairness in art history that I must address alongside the typical narrative. Art education requires more than just memorizing dates and how to correctly spell the names of dead artists. It’s important to be familiar with artwork we may not care for because it’s part of Western culture, and it’s nice to engage in the discourse of art. You’ll also be able to show off your fancy new art brain the next time you get to go to a gallery or museum. I can’t promise you’ll be fun at parties, but you will be knowledgable.
Thank you so much for sharing your time with me. I do hope that this series will inspire you to seek out more information, visit art institutions when you can, and engage in your art community. I can’t wait to dive into all the different art movements, history, artists, and works of art with you! Please subscribe so you’ll be able to catch the first full episode.
