Creative Activity Statement
Women are grossly underrepresented in the art world. Traditionally, the only way women are represented in museums is if they are objectified for the male gaze. I am compelled to create artwork that addresses gender identity, shadow time, and feminism within contemporary American culture. I create representational portraits with oil on canvas to place myself within the history of Western art. I also create fiber art to address the concepts of women’s art and women’s work. Because women artists were often denied equal educational opportunities and are frequently absent from art museums, I am motivated to create and display art to impact my community.
