Subversive Celebration: International Altered Card Exhibition
To challenge the social custom of giving boring, store-bought greeting cards for every occasion, artists worldwide altered standard cards into works of art. Some of the cards are subtle, while others are elaborately complex. These artists changed, manipulated, and mutated cards with paint, ink, embroidery, fabric and many other materials. Klaire Lockheart originated the idea for Subversive Celebration to celebrate her birthday, but these cards offer congratulations, mourn losses, and offer biting cultural criticisms. The variety of artistic techniques paired with the hilarious imagery make this show better than the curator could have anticipated.
The exhibition was on display during March, 2020 at Gallery 110 in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Arts, Vermillion, SD. This exhibition was hosted by the University of South Dakota Art Galleries.
