Toning a canvas is the first step in creating a traditional oil painting. It simply means planning the shadows and highlights of your composition with a thin layer of paint. This technique is great for making a figure painting, landscape, or still-life. I’ll demonstrate how to tone a canvas in a video I created for the Unaccredited College of Klaire. You can see how I begin a small figure painting using a neutral color on a white gessoed canvas, but you can apply this technique to your unique project. I’ll walk you through all the steps in real time, and so I recommend watching the tutorial before beginning your project. You’re also welcome to simply watch this demonstration if you’re curious about how I paint even if you don’t have plans to start a work of art of your own. To view the entire “Tone a Canvas” video demonstration, visit the Unaccredited College of Klaire on Patreon and become a Subversive Scholar. Comments are closed.
